Quiet Mind Counselling and EMDR

Hello, my name is Sarah Heap - I provide a professional, supportive and respectful listening space to overcome life's difficulties, complications and traumas.

Counselling can provide people with support and help to manage or overcome difficulties. Past events can be explored to help a person understand their responses. With the help of a counsellor people can find ways to understand their difficulties and explore ways to manage and lessen the distress. Sometimes EMDR can be used to support a person’s strengths and resources and desensitise difficult life events so that a person can move forward. Sarah uses counselling and/or EMDR to help people overcome the difficulties shown below.

Anxiety and Panic

Anxiety can range from mild to extremely debilitating (Panic Attacks) and can feel out of control at times. There can be strong feelings of worry, fear and panic that can overwhelm and limit a person’s life. Counselling and EMDR can help people understand, manage and overcome anxiety and panic so that it no longer impacts them.

Mental Health Problems

Counselling can help people cope with emotional difficulties such as depression or anxiety, or specific issues such as eating disorders, OCD, Phobias. If there have been specific difficult life events or Traumas, EMDR can be Effective in desensitising the effects of these to help people move on.

Depression and Low Mood

Depression can be caused by many factors, such as difficult life events, loss and bereavement, childhood difficulties, trauma, relationship break up, low self esteem. Sometimes it feels like there isn't a specific cause. Counselling can help people reduce or overcome negative feelings and thoughts which influence depression or low mood.

Trauma

EMDR is very effective for helping people who have been involved in serious incidents, accidents and trauma - also abuse, bullying, sexual assault,  violence, bereavement, etc. EMDR in particular helps to reduce the emotional impact of difficult life events.

Relationship Issues and Breakdown

Relationship issues can feel confusing and affect self-esteem and confidence. Breaking up from a relationship can be a major difficult life event which emotionally could feel like loss or bereavement with feelings of denial, anger, emptiness, and sadness.  Often there’s a disruption and change in everyday practical life too. Counselling is a space where people can explore their thoughts and feelings about this and take time to work out how to go forward.

Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse can be physical, sexual, financial, psychological, and emotional. Counselling and EMDR can help people understand the controlling dynamics of the relationship and recover from traumatic experiences. Children can also be hugely affected and take this with them into their adulthood.

Bullying and Abuse

The emotional and psychological effects of bullying and abuse can be serious. People sometimes underestimate the effects of something like school or workplace bullying - it can seriously undermine a person’s self esteem and sense of worth and confidence and lead to depression and anxiety. Other bullying includes sibling bullying, cyber bullying, domestic abuse, harassment and stalking. Childhood abuse is also bullying with complex affects and takes many forms. Counselling and EMDR can offer a supportive and safe environment to address feelings where there has been bullying and abuse.

Bereavement and Loss

Losing someone close to you and coping with the grief can be tough emotionally and involve major life changes. Grieving is a natural emotion and can take time. Sometimes talking with an independent counsellor can support a person going through a grieving process. If someone has intrusive traumatic thoughts as a result of the death, Counselling and EMDR may help someone recover from the traumatic aspects of this.

Illness and Medical Issues

Diagnosis and living with certain illness can be distressing. Medical interventions can be traumatic. An uncertain future can be fear provoking. Counselling and EMDR can successfully support people in overcoming and recovering from the emotional and psychological effects of illness and medical problems affecting them or someone close to them.
